Welcome to St. Edith Catholic Church!

ALL ARE WELCOME AT ST. EDITH PARISH

We will welcome you regardless of your present status in the Catholic Church. We will welcome you regardless of your current family situation or marital status. We will welcome you if you are a staunch Catholic or do not like organized religion. We will not judge you based upon your personal history, age, race, ethnic background, appearance, sexual orientation or gender identity. We welcome children, even when they act like children. If there is no crying, our Parish is dying! We are all on a spiritual journey, trying to find our way. All are welcome to join us on our spiritual journey at St. Edith.

Lenten Theme:  "Build a Better Life"

Next Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. Our theme for Lent is Build a Better Life. In order to have a good life we need to have our physical, mental and spiritual needs met. We tend to focus upon our physical and mental needs, but sometimes our spiritual needs do not get enough attention. All cultures that have existed in history have included people on a spiritual search. We need to have a sense of the transcendent in our lives, a sense of something bigger than ourselves. In the Catholic tradition this is God. We also have to have a way of connecting to the transcendent, and we call that prayer. We have the spiritual need to be part of a human family, and that need can be met through our St. Edith community. We need to have a moral compass. You can try to do this on your own, but the Church can be very helpful. To have our spiritual needs met we need to give love and to receive love. Love is not a feeling; it is how we treat one another. It is how we serve one another.

There are three pillars of Lent, prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Give some thought to what you are going to do in each of these areas to build a better live. In the area of prayer, if you are not going to Mass every weekend, make a commitment to do this during Lent. It is important to feel part of a faith community. In the area of personal prayer, if you are not praying daily, make a commitment to do so during Lent. Start with 5 minutes and commit to a particular time during the day to pray. Make it a habit. If you are praying regularly, try switching it up. Just have some quiet time with the Lord through meditation or contemplation. Spend some time praying with Sacred Scripture. The weekend Gospel readings are a good foundation for this prayer. Use the Little Black Book. You can carry it with you and pray at any time during the day.

In the area of fasting, maybe giving up sweets during Lent is not the best way for build a better life. Try giving up something that is not very good for you, and replacing it with something else. Try giving up or limiting scrolling through social media. Try limiting it to 30 minutes per day. When you are with people during the day, interact with them instead of staring at your phone. Have a conversation with the people you are having dinner with. Interact with people when you are waiting in line. Talk to the people in the waiting room, or when you are at the terminal waiting to board your plane. You will likely meet some interesting people. Call someone that you have not seen for a while and catch up with them. Have a phone conversation with someone every day. If you do something consistently for the 60 days of Lent, you will develop some new habits and build a better life during Lent.

In the area of almsgiving, perform an act of kindness every day. Keep a gratitude journal. Get any notebook and write down three things that you are grateful for every day. Make them very specific to what is happening that day and do not repeat the same things over and over again. Include the acts of kindness that people do for you. By the end of Lent you will be happier, more positive and have a better life.

These are just a few examples; there are many more things you can do to build a better life. Give it some thought. Take it to prayer. What are your spiritual needs that are not met? What will help you build a better life?

Love & Peace,

Fr. Jim

Morning Drop Off - ** Reminder **

This is a reminder when dropping your student off please follow the arrows outlined in the map below. If you would like to park and walk your child up, you are to park on the gym side of the building. Parking on the parish office/church side is a safety risk. Often cars/trucks/SUVs cannot see students who are running/walking across the parking lot on that side. Also, drivers please make sure you are being cautious as you navigate the parking lot. Thank you for working with us in order to keep our students safe.
